Frequently Asked Question #22:
Q: Do I have to book a table at restaurants?
A: In general it is safer to book a table at smaller restaurants, particularly at weekends. The weekend is the favorite time for Italians to dine out with family and friends. Note that some small restaurants only open on demand, and need some notice to prepare for you. However, if you haven't booked, it is always worth asking if there is a table available. Even if the restaurant is closed, the owner might open just for you: this happens quite frequently.
In larger - and generally cheaper - restaurants, including most pizzarias, it is usually not customary to book, even at weekends.
