Q: What is the cost of planting a new vineyard?
A: The cost of creating a new vineyard, including both labour and materials, is in the region of 25,000 Euro to 30,000 Euro per hectare, depending on a number of factors:
- The type and quality of the vines selected.
- The steepness of the slope. Some machinery can't be used on very steep slopes, which are therfore more expensive to work.
- The trellising material used. You can use inexpensive concrete posts, or wooden posts made either of oak, Piedmontese mountain chestnut or Portuguese sea pine. The last of these is the most expensive option.
The quoted cost includes both preparatory digging to a depth of 2 metres (1.8 m is the absolute minimum) and planting. There are no taxes to be paid, but a planting permit is required from the local authority. There are also no subsidies available, either: because of wine overproduction in the EU, there is no reason to subsidise production.
