Frequently Asked Question #14:
Q: Are there water shortages in Piedmont?
A: No. Three pieces of evidence point to an abundance of water:
1. There has never been water rationing in Piedmont: at times of shortage - in the year 2003, for example - water can be drawn from Lago Maggiore in the north, which serves as a huge natural reservoir.
2. Planning permission to install a swimming pool is generally granted in Piedmont. Note that in more southerly parts of Italy, including Tuscany, planning applications for swimming pools are frequently refused.
3. The fantastically productive vineyards of South Piedmont thrive without need of artificial irrigation. The vineyards there are not irrigated, and never have been.
