Frequently Asked Question #10:

Q: Are foreigners welcome in Piedmont?

A: Piedmont has a long and enduring tradition of welcoming foreigners. The following historical curiosity probably best illustrates this. The year 1492 is noted in Spanish history for two significant events: the first, well-known event was the departure of Columbus - who was born in Genoa - on his voyage of discovery to the New World of the Americas. The second, lesser-known event was the expulsion by King Ferdinand II of Spain of nearly half the Jewish population, the so-called Sephardic Jews, numbering about 160,000 in total. The majority of these exiles went either to Turkey or to Piedmont. Piedmont's new Jewish population enjoyed property rights and religious freedom almost unmatched in Europe for another 350 years. This tradition of tolerance to outsiders continues to the present day.
