"Cascina Lamberetto" - San Marzano Oliveto, Piedmont, Italy

Cascina Lamberetto is only 400 meters from the centre of the medieval hilltop village of San Marzano Oliveto. In both this picture of San Marzano Oliveto and its surrounding vineyards, and in this picture taken from a quiet lane that leads from the valley up to the village, the farmhouse is the second-nearest building. San Marzano Oliveto is a traditional Italian village with a Bank (with cash point), General Store (fresh bread daily), Post Office, a welcoming Bar and an excellent Piedmontese Restaurant. There are also three churches, one of which is being converted into a museum. From the castle and all around the village there are spectacular views of the Italian Alps, with hilltop villages and vineyards of Barbera, Cabernet, Merlot and Moscato grapes as far as the eye can see. The local wineries provide wine tasting, complimenting the wide range of reasonably-priced restaurants in the area to make a visit to this region of Italy a gastronomic delight.

San Marzano Oliveto is ideally situated for both Genoa and Turin airports, which are approximately one hour away. Milan Malpensa airport is about a one and a half hours drive. Asti, Alba, Acqui Terme and Alessandria can all be reached with half an hour, and both Nizza Monferrato and Canelli - each with a selection of swimming pools for the summer months - are just a five minute drive away.

The farmhouse has been the subject of recent internal modernisation to a very high specification. It offers the following accommodation:

• The Sitting Room

  This comfortable and stylish room has old master oil paintings and historical documents displayed with feature picture lighting surrounding two large comfortable sofas, glass and wrought iron coffee table, wall cabinet, table with chairs and a feature woodburning stove for use during the late autumn and winter evenings.

• The Cantina/Dining Hall

  A spiral staircase leads from behind the kitchen down to a cavernous floor-tiled cellar which has some natural lighting and integrated wine vats. There is a large dining table with chairs, antique press cupboard, antique cabinet and oak sideboard. One wall features a mural of the village of San Marzano Oliveto and the mountains - painted with artistic licence! This room makes for a special dining experience, complimented by the woodburning stove for the long winter evenings.

• The Saffron Bedroom

  The Saffron Bedroom has two south facing windows overlooking the Marziano Valley and a door leading to the balcony that presides over the vineyards. There is an antique oak double bedstead, bedside tables with lamps, a substantial walnut wardrobe, dressing table with chair and towel stand.

• The Four-Poster Bedroom

  The Four-Poster Bedroom window overlooks the valley and has a door leading to the balcony with its magnificent views. The mahogany four-poster double bed, dressed in regal antique-style tapestry drapes, is a special feature. There is a Louis XV style antique dressing table with antique chair, bedside cabinets with imposing table lamps, a pedestal table, linenfold coffer and towel stand.

• The Sunflower Bedroom

  The Sunflower bedroom also overlooks the vineyard-covered valley and hills, and contains antique Italian beds which can be linked into a large double or separated into twin beds. There is an Italian-style wardrobe, bedside tables with lamps, dressing table with stool, and a sofa which can be turned down to be used as an occasional double bed.

• The Kitchen

  The kitchen has recently been refurbished with white country-style units and bright Italian colours. It features a gas hob, electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, plus cutlery and crockery for up to eight people. There is every possible implement available in this fully-equipped kitchen: it was recently the experimental laboratory of a Michelin Star chef. Should you wish to take breakfast indoors, the breakfast table offers a stunning view of the valley below.

• The Bathroom and The Shower Room

  The ground floor bathroom has been fully refurbished with beautiful Italian tiles, good lighting, bathroom cabinet, mirrors, shower fittings over the bath and a new suite, including a bidet.

  The shower room is upstairs, within easy access of the bedrooms, and has a toilet, handbasin, bathroom cabinet and mirrors. The shower is spacious, with very easy access.

The south-facing garden is accessed from the side of the property through a wrought iron archway and provides parking for several cars. The large patio area has a tree-shaded stone table overlooking the vineyard and valley, ideal for dining or soaking up the magnificent view on long Summer evenings.
